How to Evaluate Barcode Scanner Reading Distance

Reading distance is a relationship between the barcode, optics and environment. Evaluate the working range using the labels and installation that matter to your project.

Start with barcode size and density

A specification expressed in mil describes a barcode element size, not a reading distance. Smaller elements can be more demanding to resolve. Provide actual code dimensions and samples alongside the symbology, rather than only saying that the application uses QR or Code 128.

Measure the full working range

Define the nearest and farthest positions and the barcode’s orientation at each. Check whether the whole code fits inside the field of view. Test the most difficult combination of code size and position, not only a large clean code at a convenient distance.

Include lighting, surface and motion

Glare, low contrast, curvature and movement can change reading performance. A phone screen brings its own brightness and reflection conditions. Evaluate with the normal lighting and expected presentation speed, and include the final window or enclosure in the setup.

Turn sample testing into acceptance criteria

Agree how the application should respond to successful reads, no-reads and repeated codes. Test enough representative examples to expose common failure conditions. Record the code sample, distance, lighting, mounting and settings so the result can be reproduced when the design changes.

Does a higher sensor resolution always give a longer range?

No. Optics, barcode size, focus and decoding performance also matter. Compare the working range for your specific code and installation.

Can I rely on a single maximum-distance figure?

Use it only with its associated barcode and test conditions. Validate the complete range with your actual application samples.
